Leonard Sikora Receives Distinguished
Alumnus Award from Buffalo State College
Leonard
S. Sikora Class of 1950 has received the Distinguished Alumnus Award
from Buffalo State College at the commencement program on May 10,
2008
Leonard
Sikora exemplifies all that Buffalo State hopes for from its alumni.
He has been successful in his career, outstanding in his character
and generous with his time, resources, and talents to the college,
his profession and community.
After
graduating, he served as a teacher and administrator in the Buffalo
Public Schools for over forty years. His career was highlighted
by groundbreaking initiatives and dynamic approaches in secondary
education.
Many
organizations have recognized his outstanding contributions. The
AM-Pol Eagle awarded him the Citizen of the Year in Education [1975].
Former Governor Mario Cuomo appointed him to the New York State
Skilled Workers Emeritus Program. AARP presented him with the Andrus
Award for Communication and Health Issues Advocacy. The Network
in Aging presented the Jerry Flaschner Humanitarian Award to him
for local, state and national contributions to the field of aging.
Mr.
Sikora serves on the boards of the Western Zone Retired Teachers
Association, Network in Aging, Erie County Senior Services Advisory
Board, and Polish Arts Scholarship Foundation, chair of Western
Zone Founder's Fund as well as on the Executive Committee of the
New York State Retired Teachers Association.
In
2005, he received the Buffalo State Foundation Chairman's Recognition
Award.
Sikora
has been an advocate for the seniors and retired educators in his
retirement.
