Monday,
June 30, 2008 - Legal Services for the Elderly and Bar Assoc. of
Erie Co. Host Golf Tournament to Benefit Older Adults -Brookfield
Country Club, Clarence, NY - "Legal
Services for the Elderly, Disabled or Disadvantaged, Inc. and the
Bar Association of Erie County will join forces this year with the
merger of two great golf tournaments - ours and that of the Bar
Association of Erie County," said Karen Nicolson, Executive
Director of LSED in an announcement this week. Organized by LSED,
the tournament is sponsored by both organizations for the benefit
of the Association's members, and as a fundraiser for this worthwhile
charitable cause. It will be held on June 30, 2008 at the Brookfield
Country Club, Clarence.
"This
golf tournament will be the premiere event for WNY's law professionals
and judges." "This event will afford corporate sponsors,
particularly those serving seniors, a significant opportunity to
benefit this population while promoting their business," Nicolson
said. "In the past, these two tournaments for lawyers competed
for the same players and sponsors, according to BAEC Vice President
Giles P. Manias, who is also a vice president on the LSED board,
and has helped to coordinate prior tournaments along with the new
event.
"Tournament organizers for both groups decided to combine their
efforts to provide an opportunity for collegiality, while also benefiting
a worthwhile charitable cause."
Also new this year is the reintroduction of a round-robin tennis
tournament to run concurrently to the golf tournament. The fee for
both tournaments is $225 per participant.
Legal Services for the Elderly, Disabled or Disadvantaged of Western
New York is celebrating its 30th year of providing free civil legal
services to the most susceptible residents of our area. In addition
to legal services, LSED offers guardian services for at-risk and
abused seniors and a pooled supplemental needs trust in partnership
with People Inc. and Key Bank.
Proceeds of the golf tournament go towards the general operating
funds for the agency, as it attempts to serve an ever increasing
number of people eligible for its services.
Sponsors may help LSED to bridge the 'justice gap' by supporting
the tournament as a golf sponsor, donating a raffle prize, or by
purchasing a tee sign or ad space in the tournament program to promote
their business. For more information about the golf tournament,
call Eileen Hotho at 853-3087, ext. 206.

Thursday,
October 30, 2008 - Network in Aging's 28th Annual Meeting and Conference
- "Aging in a Four Season Climate: Perspectives from Western New
York" - Hearthstone Manor, 333 Dick Rd., Depew - The
Conference will feature presentations from local researchers representing
a multi-disciplinary perspective on a variety of important issues
that impact on the quality of life for older adults in our region.
Researchers from the University at Buffalo's Four Seasons of Mid
Life and Aging project will report some of the findings from their
most current research including those factors that inspire older
adults to remain in western New York and those that encourage them
to reside elsewhere. The studies examine how older adults perceive
the quality of their living experience in our community as related
factors such as transportation, aging housing stock, retirement
experiences, taxes, and yes, even western New York's climate. Also
featured during the conference will be a presentation on the findings
of the Federal Reserve Board's "Aging in Place in Upstate New York"
study that examines the disparity between the houses that people
presently own and the housing they actually need. Additional details
about this conference will be forthcoming but in the meantime, hold
this date and please join us for what should be an informative conversation
about the factors that impact on "aging in place" for seniors today
and, the aging baby-boomers who will follow them. More details will
be forthcoming as they become available.
